What are UVA and
UVB rays?
The sun can damage your lips and leave them dry and sore. When
its rays reach the earth, the ultraviolet (UV) light divides
into two frequencies: A and B.
UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and are responsible for
accelerated ageing when exposure is for extended periods. The
rays reach earth at a constant rate all year round and can penetrate
dense clouds, light clothing and untinted glasses.
UVB rays are responsible for sunburn and ultimately can cause
skin cancer. These rays reach the earth at a greater rate and
intensity during the summer months, although clouds, clothing
and UV protective glasses can block them.
Sunlight is one of the most damaging factors the body encounters
and lips are particularly vulnerable. Skin has a certain amount
of natural protection in the form of melanin: light-reactive
pigments that absorb UV rays and darken (tan) in response to
exposure. Lips, however, have almost no protective melanin of
their own.
